Volunteer Ministry Center - Feeding Ministry

What is the Volunteer Ministry Center?

The Volunteer Ministry Center, located at Jackson and Gay, operates many programs for the poor and the homeless. Their dining hall provides up to 3 free meals a day. Churches and other community groups provide and serve over 35,000 meals annually.

What does St. James’ do?

St. James’ volunteers prepare and serve two lunches per month at the Volunteer Ministry Center. We are responsible for the noon day meal on the first Friday and the first Saturday of each month.

What is involved?

We have a cooking crew that prepares the Friday meal in the St. James’ kitchen. The cooking takes place on the afternoon before the feeding. It takes about 2 hours for the crew (3-5 volunteers) to prepare the meal. The serving crews work from 10:30 to 1:00 on the day the meal is served. The serving includes last minute food preparation, table setting, serving the food in a cafeteria line, interacting with the VMC clients, and sometimes doing the dishes.

Why should you get involved?

Because this is a very important ministry to those who receive the meals. In the process of serving others this ministry helps to put our own lives in perspective. You also might want to get involved because we have fun while serving in the name of the Lord.
